A dataset is a collection of examples organized for analysis or to teach, evaluate and use a machine learning system. Each example can contain text, images, audio, numbers or a combination of these formats.
In AI projects, the quality of the dataset influences what the model can learn and the types of errors it can make. A large dataset is not automatically good: duplicate examples, incorrect labels, outdated data or a sample that does not represent users can distort results.
Como funciona
A dataset is usually structured in records. In a spreadsheet, each row can represent an example and each column a feature. To classify support messages, for example, a record can contain the text, the language, the expected category and an urgency indicator.
In supervised training, examples come with known answers or labels. In other scenarios, the dataset may have no labels, or it may combine different modalities, such as images and descriptions. Organization depends on the task, the data format and the learning method.
It is common to split data for different purposes: training, validation and testing. The training set adjusts the model; validation helps compare choices during development; and testing provides a final evaluation on examples that should not guide each adjustment. This split is only useful if there is no leakage, that is, information from the same case or the final answer appearing improperly in more than one part.
Before use, the team needs to document the source, collection criteria, labels, limitations and permissions. Personal data and protected content require attention to privacy, consent, rights and purpose. Removing names alone does not guarantee that a person is no longer identifiable.
Exemplo prático
A store wants to predict which orders may be delayed. Each record can gather information available at the time of purchase, such as region, delivery type and order status, plus the outcome observed later. The variable to be predicted is the label, for example, “delivered on time” or “delayed”.
If the dataset includes the actual delivery date as input, the model will see the answer before making the prediction. Test results will look great, but they will not represent real use. The team should split by periods or customers according to the evaluation question, check missing data and compare labels with reliable records.
The same principle applies to a chatbot: question and answer examples can help test whether it finds the right information, but they should not contain secrets or customer data without authorization.
Para que serve
Datasets are used to train models, measure performance, compare versions and investigate errors. They can also support analyses without machine learning, such as reports and simple forecasts.
When choosing or building a dataset, ask: does it represent the cases the system will encounter? Were the fields collected for a legitimate purpose? Are the labels consistent? Are there duplicate, outdated or sensitive data? The answer needs to be documented, not assumed.
The dataset is part of the system, not a backstage detail. A solid evaluation depends on relevant data, correct separation and known limits. When these precautions are missing, scaling the model or changing the prompt may not fix the root cause of the problem.
